In this tutorial, you'll learn how to create delicate ronghua inspired by the Mid-Autumn Festival, including osmanthus flowers, a full moon, and an adorable little rabbit. Follow along as we guide you through essential steps like arranging silk threads, clamping copper wire, and shaping your creations with techniques like wire bending and precise trimming.
Step 1: Prepare the Silk Strips 0:00~0:35
We’ll need four sets of silk ranks/rows: For the osmanthus: 5 threads per strip, 5 groups for each of 2 colors — 10 groups total. For the bunny: Pink and white silk, 12 threads per strip, 10 groups total. For the moon: 5 threads per strip, 12 groups total. For the leaves:
5 threads per strip, 18 groups total.
Step 2: Brush and Wire the Strips 0:36~2:32
Gently brush out the silk strips until smooth and fluffy. Fold and straighten copper wire, then twist a few centimeters in the middle. You’ll need enough wire for all four silk rank sets. Use 0.2mm wire for the bunny parts. The rest can use softer wire. When tying the wire, pull it tight and straight. Wire spacing matters for the bunny: About 2.5 cm wide for the body, Around 1 cm for the limbs.
Step 3: Shape and Set the Strips 2:33~6:17
Cut the strips to your desired length. Align the ends with the wire in the center. Twist the silk strips using rolling boards, then fluff up the twisted strips with tweezers. Cut the leaf and osmanthus strips in half. Flatten the strips. Note: Bunny strips don’t need flattening or shaping at this point. Coat the remaining strips with setting liquid and let them dry. Once dry, press them flat using a warm iron.
Step 4: Shape the Bunny 6:18~7:37
For bunny strips, taper the ends. Shape the body into a round ball, and the limbs into simple curves. Set all the shaped parts aside for later assembly.
Step 5: Make the Osmanthus 7:38~14:34
Method 1 (with wire filigree): Use 0.3–0.4mm copper wire to wrap a few loops around a wooden stick or hairpin. Flatten the round loops slightly. Apply a thin layer of glue, then stick the wire onto a silk strip. Press down, then trim the edges with scissors. Use a warm iron to gently curl the petals — no heat needed. Combine 4 petals to make a single osmanthus flower. Tie a knot at the base and trim the excess thread.
Method 2 (with shaping iron): Trim a rough petal shape from the silk strip. Use a heated shaping iron (like a curling or flat iron). If you don’t have one, use a ball stick while the strip is still damp with setting liquid. The main difference: one uses heat, the other doesn’t. Combine 4 shaped petals, then glue a tiny bead in the center.
Step 6: Make the Leaves 14:35~17:05
Bend wire into a basic leaf outline. Apply glue to the wire, then press it onto a silk strip. Place the piece on a sponge mat and press to create gentle curves.
Step 7: Make the Moon 17:06~18:19
Apply white glue onto two silk strips and stick them together. Shape a piece of wire into a circle (use a bottle cap as a guide). Glue the wire onto the silk strip and trim off any excess.
Step 8: Assemble Everything 18:20~21:24
When you’re ready, trim the end of each wire at a slant. Choose a hairpin base and wrap the finished parts onto it with silk thread. Adjust the petals and flowers to make them look more natural.
Step 9: Put the Bunny Together 21:25~end
Use 3 fluffy strips for the head. Fix both ends together. Shape the cheeks slightly to puff out. Trim any extra wire, then bend and tuck the ends into the head. Glue a tiny bead on for the nose. Use the biggest strip for the body — apply white glue and attach the head. The glue will dry clear and won’t leave marks. Shape the limbs with tweezers, then fix the legs to the body using silk thread.
Bonus: Make a Springy Bunny!
Wrap silk thread around a wire, then coil it around a small stick — this creates a spring. For the arms, trim the strips in half. Shorter is cuter! Cut off any extra wire.
Final Touches
Flatten the ears with a warm iron and trim to shape. Add a soft curve with the iron.
Glue the ears onto the bunny’s head. To make bunny teeth, wrap thread around a piece of wire and glue it to the mouth.
And that’s it! You’ve now made an adorable bunny with osmanthus flowers and a moon! Let me know if you’d like a stylized version for Instagram carousel, a printable PDF guide, or a script formatted for a voiceover.
