Want to create a phone case that’s not just protective but also a work of art? 🎨✨ In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to craft your own Plum Tree Lacquered iPhone Case using our DIY kit! Inspired by traditional Da Qi lacquer techniques, this project blends heritage with modern style.
Step 1: Base Preparation and Lacquer Priming 0:00~1:01
Sand the entire phone case using 400 grit sandpaper, paying special attention to corners. Wipe off dust after sanding. Dip a soft brush in raw lacquer and apply a thin, even coat. Curing method: Place the case in a box with a damp cloth or water bowl, in a stable environment (20℃–30℃). Avoid direct sunlight or strong wind. After drying, repeat the application and drying process three times in total. Apply each layer thinly and evenly, especially around edges to prevent wrinkles or buildup.
After the third coat is completely dry, lightly sand the surface using 800 grit sandpaper. Follow with 1000 grit to smooth any rough spots. Be gentle around edges to avoid sanding through. Every 10–15 seconds, clean off dust and inspect the surface. Continue until the lacquer is fully matte and uniform.
Apply a thin, even coat of black lacquer and let it dry. Repeat two more times, checking if the lacquer is thoroughly dry between each layer.
Trim mother-of-pearl pieces to your design. If it's a whole sheet, use a carving knife to segment. Lightly press onto the surface after the third black lacquer coat. Adjust placement as needed. Apply one coat of black lacquer to secure the pieces. Let it dry. Add two more coats to fully embed the inlays, making sure the lacquer is thoroughly dry between each.
Step 5: Revealing the Mother-of-Pearl 4:20~4:58
Lightly polish using 1000 grit sandpaper, gradually increasing to 2000, 5000, and 7000. Check frequently to avoid over-sanding or dulling the inlay. For unrevealed areas, carefully scrape with a carving knife—avoid dislodging the inlay.
After revealing, apply one more coat of black lacquer to fill in any gaps. Repeat the polish–coat cycle at least three times until the surface is smooth and even. Finish with a final polish using 7000 grit.
Wipe a thin layer of lacquer, let sit for 1 minute, then gently clean with lint-free paper. Apply a small amount of vegetable oil, spread evenly, and dust with polishing powder. Protect the surface with a cloth and polish thoroughly using your palm and fingers. Wash the phone case thoroughly with dish soap to remove any oil residue. If the surface is still matte, repeat polishing until glossy.
If any area is over-sanded and the base is exposed, reapply lacquer and allow to fully dry before re-sanding. Always wear gloves—raw lacquer can cause allergic reactions. Work in a clean, ventilated area to avoid dust contamination.
