After months of experimentation since last fall, we’re so excited to finally introduce our very first DIY kit for the traditional Chinese craft of 烫花 (Tàng Huā) — scorched flowers.

This beautiful and intricate technique dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. By using specially shaped heated irons, artisans shaped silk into delicate, lifelike petals and leaves. Once a cherished part of palace accessories, stage costumes, and folk celebrations, Tanghua carries with it a long history of craftsmanship, symbolism, and artistic devotion.

We chose to launch this kit in June because it aligns with a lovely seasonal tradition in Chinese culture: 送花神 (Farewell to the Flower Goddess). As summer approaches and the blooms of spring begin to fade, people once gathered to honor and bid farewell to the flower goddess — a poetic way of recognizing beauty as it slips away. They wore silk flowers, crafted them for ceremonies, and celebrated the fleeting grace of seasonal blossoms like peonies, cherry blossoms, and begonias. It’s a tradition full of romance and nostalgia, and one that feels especially meaningful to us.

Inspired by that sentiment, we spent nearly twenty days crafting a basket full of lush silk peonies using the Tanghua method. Of course, you won’t need to craft a full basket if you have limited time! In this kit, we’ve included everything you need to create around ten medium-to-large silk flowers at your own pace, in your own style.

In the DIY Kit, you’ll find a generous amount of high-quality silk fabric, plaster stamens, and four silk pigments — pink, yellow, blue, and green — that you can mix freely to create a wide range of colors.

In the Toolkit, We’ve also prepared a complete set of essential tools, including a professional flower-shaping iron (60W, 220V-240V, with outlet adaptor provided) with 17 interchangeable heads, scissors, tweezers, and other small but handy instruments to help bring your flowers to life.
