The Lansei China team came to London to show off their craft and I decided to give it a go since I had something later to do in London that day. It was a lot of fun to make my Rose Myrtle and I was happy with the result. I can see a lot of potential to make very interesting designs with it. The ones they had on show looked amazing in person. I got the Purple Iris kit to try at home, along with the toolkit and stand. I also got some archival glue and distilled water to use in place of their recommendation of hairspray as I think that will degrade less.
I haven't actually had a chance to try it out yet as I've been quite busy lately, but I would recommend people give one of their easier kits a go to see if you enjoy it. You could get the tools yourself, but getting them in the cute wrapped package is convenient. They also provide PTFE Fibreglass Tape to put on the hair straighteners to prevent scratching from the annealed copper wire, I looked into the tape they provided and both the tape and adhesive should be safe to use with the heat of the iron.
They did also provide a small pan of watercolour paint for use with the Purple Iris. I am a little cautious to use unmarked paint as I do not know if it contains chemicals such as cadmium or if it is sensitizing, so I can't verify if it's safe to wear. I am sure it's not a big deal in reality, I'm just a bit of a safety freak. I'm sure even without the small streaks of paint I will be happy with my creation. After completing this project myself start to finish, my plan would be to start designing my own creations.
The people involved clearly care about what they're doing; Jing and Tang were very nice to meet. I wish them well with promoting their craft.
