The artwork is created through a six-color printing process, using natural plant pigments for each color and each block.

It depicts a scene from the Sichuan Opera "Autumn River." The story unfolds during the Southern Song Dynasty, focusing on Pan Bizheng. His father, while in office, had arranged for him to be engaged to Jiaolian, the daughter of Chen. However, due to subsequent events, the two families lost contact. In the 16th year of the Jin Dynasty, Jiaolian, whose father had passed away, fell victim to the chaos caused by the southern invasion of the Jin army. She reluctantly entered the Jinling city outside the female Chaste Observation Temple, adopting the name Chen Miao Chang and becoming a female Taoist.

At this time, Pan Bizheng had become a Jinshi, having failed the imperial examination in the capital. Ashamed to return home, he took refuge in the Chaste Observation Temple overseen by his aunt. This is where he and Miao Chang met and fell in love. Once the temple's leader discovered the situation, she forced Pan Bizheng to rush to the capital for the imperial examination, attempting to separate the two. After Pan left, Miao Chang hurriedly followed by boat to bid him farewell in the middle of the river, exchanging gifts and making a pact, parting with tears.

Later, Pan Bizheng passed the imperial examination and returned to his hometown. Only then did he discover that his father had arranged a marriage for him, and the intended bride was none other than his beloved, Chen Miao Chang. They were reunited and got married.
