Gravure sur bois | Le mariage de la souris

This is one of the most beloved themes in Chinese woodblock printing. The technique employed to apply colors is known as '套绘' or 'layered printing,' where each color is individually printed using a separate woodblock.

About the story of ‘The Mouse’s Wedding’:

In a distant past, there lived an elderly mouse couple in a dark and damp burrow. They had a beautiful daughter who had come of age for marriage. Determined to find the best husband for her, the mouse couple embarked on a journey to seek a groom.

They first approached the sun, thinking it was the most powerful entity, but the sun declined, fearing dark clouds. The dark clouds, in turn, feared the wind, and the wind feared walls. When they asked the walls what they were afraid of, the walls revealed that they feared mice the most.

Finally, the mouse couple decided that there was nothing they feared except for cats. So, they found a spotted cat and married their daughter to it. The wedding ceremony was grand, but the cat turned out to be cunning, as it devoured its bride on the wedding day.
