About
Handmade Ronghua | Fragrant Secret Gourd
This is one of our studio’s favourite recent projects — combining ronghua, beading, and traditional Chinese fragrances into one enchanting craft.
There’s an old Chinese saying, “葫芦里卖的什么药?” — literally, “What medicine is being sold in that gourd?” It’s often used to playfully ask what secret or surprise someone is hiding. We gave this saying a little twist and turned it into:
“What fragrance is inside your gourd? 👀”
Fragrance Options
Each tiny fragrance ball is handmade with natural ingredients, echoing the charm of ancient Chinese incense recipes. Choose the one that speaks to your mood:
🌿 Natural Agarwood (天然沉香)
A timeless classic — deep, resinous, and soothing. True agarwood carries a sweet warmth that unfolds differently with each temperature, making it both grounding and elegant.
🌳 Old Mountain Sandalwood (老山檀香)
A vintage and mellow sandalwood blend with hints of agarwood and beeswax. Its scent is rich yet calming, with a quiet dignity that lingers softly over time.
❄️ Snowborne Spring (雪中春信)
Inspired by plum blossoms blooming in the snow — a cool, ethereal scent with soft woody undertones and a faint, sweet herbal freshness. Gentle and poetic, like a whisper of spring in winter.
🌼 Jasmine of Cool Serenity (清冷茉莉)
Dried jasmine petals are crushed and blended with agarwood, sandalwood, and honey. The mixture is kneaded into small balls, then dusted with fine jasmine pollen — thus the Jasmine Fragrance Pills are born. The scent is delicate yet refreshing, carrying a quiet elegance that lingers like moonlight on porcelain.
🌿 Osmanthus of Jiangnan (江南桂花)
A blend of osmanthus blossoms and traditional Chinese herbs, this fragrance is sweet but never cloying — graceful and nostalgic. It evokes the gentle breeze of early autumn in Jiangnan, where the scent of osmanthus drifts through narrow lanes. Beyond its tender sweetness, osmanthus contains natural aromatic compounds known to soothe the throat and ease breathing, leaving both the body and the spirit refreshed.
🍐 Pear Chamber Fragrance (鹅梨帐中香)
Recorded in The Compendium of Fragrances (Xiang Cheng, Ming Dynasty, Volume 14), this recipe was once known as “The Fragrance of the Southern Lady’s Chamber.” It blends agarwood and sandalwood as the base, enriched with musk, borneol, pear blossom, and honey. The result is a scent soft and luminous — like dew on pear blossoms or silk curtains swaying in a night breeze.
When lit, the fragrance opens with a gentle fruit note layered over mellow wood, then deepens into a faint sweetness of honey and floral warmth. Subtle yet lingering, it feels like a memory half-remembered — poetic, refined, and unmistakably oriental.

from 440 reviewsI made up this beautiful kit during Lansei China's visit to London. It is a great kit for beginners as the petals are pre prepared so you just concentrate on the petal trimming, shaping and putting it all together. I can definitely recommend as a starter kit or perhaps a kit to complete more quickly for a special gift.
I have tried lots of different crafts but nothing like ronghua before, I've really enjoyed trying my hand at something new. The video tutorial has been very helpful, and while it's not something I am immediately good at (it will definitely take time to master), but thats part of the joy. The team at Lansei China have been great, they sent my order very fast and kindly refunded a workshop when I was unable to attend, I would definitely recommend this company if you are interested in trying ronghua
I am really enjoying making silk flowers. It is very therapeutic even though some stages are a little fiddly but I’m getting better each time. The end product is so worth it. I will say that having experimented with cheaper silks, it’s worth spending that little bit more as the silks from Lansei are far superior and the end product definitely looks more realistic.
Beautiful item!
Lansei China is truly exceptional! Their Ronghua silk flower designs are exquisite, showcasing extraordinary creativity, delicate craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for traditional Chinese artistry. Every creation reflects elegance, passion and remarkable attention to detail. Their professionalism, commitment to quality and inspiring designs make them truly stand out. A beautiful art form brought to life with exceptional skill and dedication. Highly recommended!
Amazing and beautiful artist and work!
Maravilloso producto, la mejor calidad en todo aspecto, colores hermosos. Muy feliz con mi compra. Gracias por el obsequio!!
My first Rhongua project (irises) but not my last - I ordered three more kits, and have started on my second project - sunflowers.
This is a finicky hobby, even as an experienced fiber artist, there is a learning curve! My second set of irises definitely came out better than the first, although even my first attempt came out beautifully. I really appreciate that enough material is included to make a whole second pair of irises, plus plenty for mistakes/waste.
For the fine detail oriented that appreciate a challenge, you gotta try this!
While the video is great, I wish some written reference was included. The card that came with my later kits is very helpful, especially in combination with the video. More subtitles in the video that identify the details would be helpful too.
The Lansei China team came to London to show off their craft and I decided to give it a go since I had something later to do in London that day. It was a lot of fun to make my Rose Myrtle and I was happy with the result. I can see a lot of potential to make very interesting designs with it. The ones they had on show looked amazing in person. I got the Purple Iris kit to try at home, along with the toolkit and stand. I also got some archival glue and distilled water to use in place of their recommendation of hairspray as I think that will degrade less.
I haven't actually had a chance to try it out yet as I've been quite busy lately, but I would recommend people give one of their easier kits a go to see if you enjoy it. You could get the tools yourself, but getting them in the cute wrapped package is convenient. They also provide PTFE Fibreglass Tape to put on the hair straighteners to prevent scratching from the annealed copper wire, I looked into the tape they provided and both the tape and adhesive should be safe to use with the heat of the iron.
They did also provide a small pan of watercolour paint for use with the Purple Iris. I am a little cautious to use unmarked paint as I do not know if it contains chemicals such as cadmium or if it is sensitizing, so I can't verify if it's safe to wear. I am sure it's not a big deal in reality, I'm just a bit of a safety freak. I'm sure even without the small streaks of paint I will be happy with my creation. After completing this project myself start to finish, my plan would be to start designing my own creations.
The people involved clearly care about what they're doing; Jing and Tang were very nice to meet. I wish them well with promoting their craft.
Ronghua DIY Kit | Red Plum Blossom
I've ordered a couple of kits, Purple Magnolia and Birdie in Spring from Lansei China. I also ordered the essential tool kit, bamboo trimming cup and extra silk. I am very pleased with my purchases. The kits are excellent quality and have plenty supplies to complete the flowers. Kits arrive with clear step-by-step instructions and the website has complete instruction videos for all of the kits.
Twisting the wires is the hardest part of creating the flowers. I purchased some climbers chalk and was able to easily twist the wires.
I truly enjoy creating these beautiful flowers and will purchase additional kits in the future.
I love the Lansei kits and equipment, and the results are beautiful.
I have completed a few kits now and I’m hooked! It’s so therapeutic (if a bit fiddly at times)
Everything from start to finish was amazing. The carefully wrapped package, the high quality materials and the detailed tutorials contributed to making my first experience with ronghua a pleasant journey. It's a time consuming process but a rewarding one nevertheless. And remember: don't get disappointed early on, trust the process and your hard work!!! I'll definitely order more in the future.
I have been watching Lansei China for some time and finally became the owner of a few of their kits: the exquisite silk embroidery pin cushion, the silk embroidery hydrangea ear cuff and ear ring and the daffodil Rong Hua kit, complete with tools. I love watching the videos and can see how special these intangible heritage crafts are; upon receiving my package and un wrapping you can see and feel the care taken by Lansei China to ensure we receive a truly wonderful product. I am on with my pin cushion and cannot wait to try (pluck up courage) to have a go at the Rong Hua daffodils.
